Weaving is the whole point. The stylist takes a section, lifts alternating strands with the tail of a comb, and wraps them so the product sits against the hair rather than open to the air. That wrap keeps the strands on either side clean, which is how you get lift right up against the scalp without the entire head going lighter.

It also buys control. Every foil is a decision — how fine the weave, how close to the root, how much depth is left in between — so the same technique gives one client a soft sunlit blonde and the next a graphic, high-contrast look. Freehand painting is lovely for lived-in dimension, but it cannot brighten a root. If you want all-over lift, or brightness that reads from the parting out, this is the honest answer.

A partial covers the top and the sides — the hair that frames your face and the hair that shows in photographs. It is the right call if you wear your hair down most days, or if you are maintaining an existing set and only the visible pieces have grown out.

A full adds the back and the underneath. That matters if you live in a ponytail, if your hair is long enough that the back of your head is the part everyone sees, or if you are going meaningfully lighter than where you started. We look at your hair, your parting and how you actually wear it before quoting, so nobody pays for coverage nobody will ever see.

Two things: how much hair there is, and how much of it we are foiling. Length drives the first, and there is a bracket above long for hair that is also dense or coarse, because a thick head of long hair takes half again as much product and time as a fine one at the same length. The bracket is confirmed at the consultation, before anything is mixed — nobody should be surprised at the desk.

Going several levels lighter, or lifting over an old box colour, can add a step and gets quoted once we have seen the hair in person. If you have coloured at home in the last year, say so when you book. It changes what a single appointment can safely achieve, and that is much better known in advance than discovered halfway through.

Lightener only removes. It does not decide what shade you end up with, and left alone, lifted hair reads yellow or orange depending on how dark it started. The toner that follows at the shampoo bowl is where beige, ash, honey or champagne actually happens, and it is part of every highlight appointment here rather than an add-on at the till.

Toner is also the first thing to fade, usually four to six weeks in. That is normal and it does not mean the foils have failed. A gloss refreshes the tone in well under an hour for a fraction of what a new set costs, which is why regulars book one in between rather than sitting through foils more often than their hair needs.

Bring photographs. Not so we can copy them, but because blonde means five different things to five different people and an image settles in ten seconds what ten minutes of describing will not. Bring one you love and, if you have it, one you would hate — the second is often the more useful of the two.
