How you handle the next two days matters more than anything you do later. Depending on the system we use, hair may need to stay dry, down, and free of clips or hair ties for up to 48 hours — a dent set in that window can last weeks. You will be told which formula went on your hair and exactly how long to wait before you leave the chair.

Sulfates are the enemy. A sulfate shampoo strips this faster than anything else you could do, so a sulfate-free wash is the single purchase that protects what you paid for. Washing less often helps too, and keeping chlorine and salt water off treated hair helps most of all — a summer of pool days will take months off the result.

Most clients get around three months before the smoothing has clearly worn off, with coarse or tightly curled hair a little under that and finer, wavier hair sometimes running past it. It fades rather than stopping, so there is no line and no deadline: you rebook when the frizz starts answering back, not because a calendar said so.

Colour and keratin coexist happily, but the order matters — colour first, smoothing second. The heat step can shift a fresh tone slightly, and we would far rather tone after we know what the treatment has done than try to correct it a week later. It is also not right for everyone. Very fine hair can be left limp, hair already fragile from repeated lightening should recover first, and anyone pregnant should wait.
